Mala is a Sanskrit word meaning Garland and is the term for a beautiful string of beads traditionally used for meditation, intention setting and mindfulness. Yogis and Buddhists were the first to use mala to enhance their spiritual practices using them to keep count of mantra repetitions or japa during meditation. WHAT IS CRYSTAL HEALING?

HOW MANY BEADS ARE THERE AND WHY?
Mala is usually made of 108 beads and one guru bead. This enhances the practice of japa meditation, also known as mantra meditation, by keeping count of the number of times a mantra is chanted. Malas can be made with fewer beads for example 18, 27 or 54 and some holy texts say a mala should only consist of nine beads meaning a mantra chanting 108 times would require you to complete 12 turns of the nine-bead mala. A mala with 27 beads is used for attaining spiritual progress, while a mala with 108 beads is used to achieve fulfillment.
WHY ARE THERE KNOTS BETWEEN EACH BEAD?
Traditional malas are hand-knotted between each bead. Each knot signifies the challenges we meet in life and serves as a reminder that all aspects of life are inter-connected.
WHAT DOES THE GURU BEAD REPRESENT?
The guru bead is the heart of the mala as it represents a significant teacher we wish to honour whether it be Buddha, a Deity, God, or any spiritual teacher that has personal significance to us. The guru bead marks both the beginning and the end of a mala and each of our handmade malas include a companion guru bead which represents anyone in our life that has had an impact on our personal and spiritual growth.
